Madonna was on hand, and hands on, during a recent school groundbreaking in Malawi. The pop star got her hands dirty when she dug up some soil at the site for a new girls academy she is building.

With her eldest daughter Lourdes at her side, Madonna cut cake, planted a tree and turned sod at a ceremony which drew 1,000 locals. "After seeing all the hard working Malawian women who are looking after families and communities, I realized how much they deserve to be educated," said Madonna.
According to a brochure for the Raising Malawi Girls Academy, it will be a "leadership institution to prepare future women leaders" with 500 boarders from each of the country's 28 districts. The school is modeled on the academy Oprah Winfrey set up in South Africa. It will take two years to build.

With two of her children-Mercy James and David Banda- having been adopted from Malawi, Madonna has been committed to aiding the impoverished country. She has already built a multi-purpose community center which looks after nearly 8,000 orphans.

On the day she was to play for over 60,000 French fans, Madonna is instead paying respects to two of her stagehands that died Thursday in an equipment accident.

Despite rumors of a sour love connection, are Madonna and ex-husband Guy Ritchie playing nicely with one another's friends?
It would sure seem that way, as Madonna has been busying herself with settling in new daughter Mercy James, Ritchie has been partying with her close pals and collaborators.
Thursday evening in London, fashion house Prada threw a chic benefit for the Congo, where Ritchie joked and laughed intimately with longtime Madonna friend Stella McCartney (pictured), designer and daughter to Beatle Paul McCartney.
Just two nights prior, Ritchie hosted Justin Timberlake at his pub in London, a major collaborator and influence on Madge's last top-selling disc Hard Candy.
Someone warn Gwyneth Paltrow, Ritchie may be ringing soon to make a cameo in Goop.

While Mercy James Chifundo was transported to her new home and mother under a shroud of secrecy last week, Madonna and child have stepped out in public in London, England.
The adorable Mercy James was spotted Friday getting a piggyback ride from her mom Madge, both ladies leaving London's Kabbalah Center.
En route to their Mayfair townhome, Mercy looks comfy and cute with the pop star.

Superstar Madonna’s four-year-old adopted daughter is getting used to life in London after being flown from her shanty town in Malawi.
The superstar dispatched a nanny to fly on a private jet to South Africa on Friday night before taking a first class flight to Heathrow.
Madonna immediately took the little girl to meet her new siblings Rocco, 8, Lourdes, 12, and David, 3, at a Kabbalah meeting.
And her ex-husband Guy Ritchie joined the group to greet Mercy before taking David and Rocco to his country estate so that Madonna could spend more time with her new daughter.
After the hour long service the party returned to Madonna’s $10 million town home in Mayfair where Mercy later made her first public appearance wearing a pink dress to greet guests at the front door.
One onlooker said: “Mercy looked slightly confused. It has obviously been a bit like a circus around her the past few days so it’s not surprising. It was only a day or two ago that she was still in Malawi and now she finds herself in the middle of London without her friends.”
Madonna ‘s adoption bid was plagued with controversy and the child’s biological father James Kambewa hit out once again at the multi-millionaire star.
He told local reporters: “My Mercy is gone. Madonna has used her money and power but my blood lives in Mercy for ever and ever. There is nothing I can do now.”
If Mercy’s experience living with Madonna is anything like David Banda’s then she can get used to a much more opulent lifestyle.
David wears designer clothes, flies around the world in private jets and is privately schooled too.
Life for Mercy James, with the Material Mom will never be the same again.

Adjusting to life as Madonna's daughter was never going to be typical.
Reports Sunday said that after meeting her new mom on Friday, adopted Madonna daughter Mercy James was given her first Kabbalah lesson.
After a 6,000 mile journey from an orphanage in Malawi, Mercy arrived (pictured) in London with Madge where the pair greeted her new siblings Lourdes, Rocco and David at The Kabbalh Center, reports UK’s Mirror.
Also there to welcome the 3-year-old was Madonna's ex-husband Guy Ritchie.

The rags-to-riches story of Chifundo "Mercy" James continues.
The four-year-old girl -- who pop icon Madonna was permitted to adopt by Malawi officials last week after an arduous legal battle -- will move into the singer's posh Malawi mansion called Kumbali Lodge.
A nanny and nurse have been flown into the African nation from the US to take care of the tot, who was previously living in an Malawi orphanage.
